Camera Work Reflection

We learned about camera movements and angles by defining each shot and movement and understanding why a film maker would use that movement or angle and how it would make the audience feel. We also did projects that focused primarily on using certain camera movements and angles to convey a story to the audience. There were also helpful activities where we had to identify what movement or angle was used in a short clip of a film or show.

In my camera movement project, I worked with a group, and we had to film a short video with the prompt: surprise including certain camera movements such as pan, tracking, tilt, pull out, boom, and static. So, me and the group I was working with decided to have the story of our video to be opening a college acceptance letter. We had a very fun time filming and seeing what it was like to get a bit of experience in film making. In the camera shot project, I worked alone, and I had to make up a story for an inanimate object, and I chose some keychains off my backpack to be the characters of the story. We had to include certain types of shots and then we were able to do any other kind of shot we wanted. For both projects we had to create a storyboard before moving on to filming.

Here are the story boards for both the movement project and angle project

Some challenges I faced while doing the projects were figuring out how to execute the shots and movements properly. For my camera shot/angles project, I had trouble completing a mid-shot with the keychain I was using because the animal is in a laying down position so if I were to stand him up, he would not be looking at the camera. So, I had to balance him on an angle so that only his top half was visible to the camera, and the audience was able to see the background. A challenge I faced while working on the movements project was executing the movements without making the scene look strange or awkward. Specifically with the tracking movement. I feel that the scene including the tracking movement was very awkward because of the silence as the characters were walking to the desk.

Some successes I had while doing the projects were being able to complete these projects in a timely manner and correctly assigning certain angles and movements to convey a certain feeling to the audience. When my group and I were assigned the movements project, we completed our project quickly and with minimal issues. As well as the angles project, I had to complete the project during that class period because I was absent one day and was a little bit behind, but I managed to complete the project quickly and was even able to start the PowerPoint required for the assignment.

For the angles project, I had to convey emotions for an inanimate object, so I had to be particular in what shots I used for certain scenes. For example, in the scene where Duck falls from the tray, I included a close-up of his face to convey Duck’s sadness and defeat to the audience. All the scenes shot during the angles project made it so I had to consider which shots would display the emotion I wished for the audience to feel.

Throughout the process of completing the projects, I gained a better understanding of camera movements and shots and what it is like to think like a film maker. I found it very fascinating to learn why film makers make certain decisions in their films during the project. The projects showed me what media is like from the perspective of a producer instead of a consumer. The projects solidified the meaning and purpose of shots and movements by providing an example of what the shots and movements look like and having me conduct the shots and movements.

Something I might do differently next time for the projects is trying to challenge myself more and think more outside the box. For the next project I might try to make my movements and shots more complex or interesting. Perhaps, a tracking shot or a trucking shot. I think doing a moving shot or using rare angles for the next project will challenge me to be more creative with my ideas.
